As a master myself, I cant agree entirely with the interviewee. Ships getting larger is not the driver of the number of crew. Its the role of the vessel that drive the crew numbers. Larger cargo ships just have more hold space and/or deck space. You dont need more engineers, bridge watchkeepers or deckhands just because you have more cargo. His statement that legislation has not added more safety equipment is simply untrue – AIS, VDR, ECDIS, SMS and ISM have all been mandated in the last 20 years. I agree that as vessels have got larger the tugs and other support items need to get bigger too and so does the skills required to handle everything. The only crew member added has been an ETO (for comms, nav and computer equipement).
What a poor journalism approach: a speaker that prevents a knowledgeable professional guest to develop a logical argumentation in order to be able to air a (superficial) unnecessary topic made by one of his fellow colleague who has equally less knowledge about a given topic…and probably under a time constraints to place commercial 🙈 … when journalism shot in their own foot! Unknowledgeable public flight to even worse places (FB and the like) and curious solvent public move to high-fees normal quality sources of information!

Hurry up with my drugs.. I hate waiting
Just go around the Cape. It’s only an extra 9 days, which is less time then it would take to get this mess cleaned up
Things like this show just how antiquated our world really is.
Ahem…. Damn everything has become sooo Constipated in the World… Is it Suez or Sewerage canal… hahaa….
Don’t interview live if you don’t have flexibility in time 🙁
